The decision · Cleaning vs replacement
DPF cleaning vs replacement. The honest comparison.
A blocked filter is not a failed filter. Here is the actual difference between cleaning one and replacing it — including the one case where we will tell you to replace.

A blockage and a failure are not the same thing
When a dealer quotes you for a new particulate filter, the diagnosis behind it is usually correct as far as it goes: back pressure is high, flow is restricted, the car is in limp mode. What that diagnosis does not distinguish is whether the ceramic core is damaged or simply full.
That distinction is the whole argument. A full filter can be emptied. A cracked or melted one cannot be, and no amount of cleaning will bring it back. In our experience the large majority of filters quoted for replacement fall into the first category — they are doing exactly what they were designed to do, which is fill up, and they need servicing rather than replacing.
The reason the replacement recommendation is so common is not usually dishonesty. Most workshops are not equipped to clean a filter properly, so from where they stand replacement genuinely is the only option they can offer.
The numbers
What each route actually costs you
Replacement on a mainstream BS6 diesel starts around ₹80,000 and climbs steeply from there; on imported and premium cars it frequently reaches ₹2,50,000 once parts and labour are counted. Add the waiting time for a part that may not be stocked locally.
Cleaning starts at ₹6,999 for a hatchback or sedan, ₹8,999 for most SUVs and MPVs, and ₹12,999 for luxury and imported units that need specialist removal and adaptation resets. Those are starting prices — we give you a fixed quote after the diagnosis and before any work begins, and we do not start until you have agreed it.
There is also a time cost worth counting. A doorstep clean is normally finished in a day at your address. A replacement means the car is off the road for as long as the part takes to arrive, which on imported filters can run into weeks.
The honest caveat
When we will tell you to replace it
If the ceramic core is cracked, melted or heavily oil-contaminated, cleaning is a waste of your money and we will say so. A melted core has usually been destroyed by repeated failed regenerations or by unburnt fuel igniting inside it; a cracked one may have been damaged thermally or physically. Neither can be restored.
When we find that, we show you the photographs. You are entitled to see the evidence for a recommendation that expensive, whichever direction the recommendation goes.
The other honest caveat: cleaning fixes the filter, not the cause. If a leaking injector, a failing EGR valve or a faulty pressure sensor is what filled the filter, it will fill again. We flag the cause as part of every job, because a clean that lasts four months is not a saving.
Common questions
Answered
Is a cleaned filter as good as a new one?
For a blocked but undamaged core, effectively yes — flow is restored to near-original and we give you the before and after readings so you can see it rather than take our word for it. What cleaning cannot fix is a cracked or melted core, and we check for that before quoting.
Why did my dealer not offer cleaning as an option?
Usually because they are not equipped to do it. Proper cleaning needs specialist flushing equipment and a flow test bench; without those, replacement is the only option a workshop can honestly offer. It is less often a sales tactic than a capability limit.
Will the blockage just come back after cleaning?
Only if whatever caused it is still there. Blocked filters are frequently a symptom of something upstream — a leaking injector, a failing EGR valve, a bad sensor, or simply a driving pattern that never lets the exhaust get hot. We identify and flag the cause as part of every job.
